“You didn’t have to say that, but it was totally worth seeing the look on Jeff’s face.” Rory told Brett as they made their way down the front steps after Rory’s shower and change of clothes.

Brett took his hand again, his entire body tingled. A week ago, three hours ago, Rory couldn’t have dreamed this would be happening. He liked sex, a lot, but he also loved small touches and caresses, things he defined as ‘romancing the body’. Not that any of his boyfriends had been very good at it. He peeked over at Brett only to discover Brett watching him.

“We still have a way to go, getting to know each other but I’d like to get to know you better Rory — aside of course from the facts I gleaned from your parents.”

“Oh my God,” Rory groaned. “My reputation is never going to recover. Um, so…” he said to get away from talking about his parents. “Where are we going? And where’s Lucille?”

“With Dag and Jaime who’ve apparently adopted her as the ‘winery’ dog for the weekend. She’s getting all sorts of treats and Jaime is probably letting her up on the couch,” Brett halfheartedly grumbled.

“What about the store?” Rory felt stupid for not realizing earlier that the store was probably closed because Brett was in Seattle.

“Closed for the day, but I should get back by noon tomorrow.”

If they only had something like fifteen hours, Rory wanted to make the best of them.

“Did you have a place in mind?” If Brett didn’t have something up his sleeve Rory knew a restaurant he wanted to take him to.

“I wasn’t exactly sure you’d say yes.”

There was something Rory needed to know, something that had been bothering him since Brett showed up at the coffee shop.

“When we were at the winery, you said you weren’t ready to dive back into the dating pool.”

Brett’s grip on Rory’s hand tightened. “I did. It’s taken me a few years and, who knows. Maybe if it wasn’t you… Jaime was so mad when she found out.” He grimaced and rolled his eyes.

Rory stopped walking, forcing Brett to look at him. “But — if you aren’t ready it isn’t fair to either of us.”

His heart pounded in his chest from the words he’d uttered. Rory wanted Brett, he’d been dreaming about him for the past week— but he was afraid to get his hopes up even now with Brett still holding his hand. He didn’t think he could ‘just be friends’ with the sexy bookshop owner. Crap, he sighed at himself — this was the other reason he was alone, too intense was what potential boyfriends said, too this, too that. Well fuck it all, Rory didn’t know any other way to be.

Instead of answering him, Brett leaned in and kissed him. Later, Rory tried to distinguish before and after but everything was their kiss. Brett’s lips soft against his own, maybe a little dry at first. Brett smelled like wool and caramels, his chin slightly scratchy against Rory’s cheek where his beard was growing in.
